Don’t Let Your Back Suffer This Holiday Season
As the holidays approach, what’s meant to be a season of joy often turns into a source of back strain, and for many, persistent pain. Between hauling decorations up ladders, schlepping heavy shopping bags, and playing host to festive gatherings, your spine and muscles can quickly feel the brunt of the season. But at Hands of Hope, we believe in more than just surviving the holidays; you can thrive through them, pain-free, with the right care and smart habits.

Why the Holidays Can Be Tough on Your Back
Decorating your home may feel magical, but scaling a ladder to hang lights or stretching awkwardly to put up garlands isn’t great for your spine. Repetitive twisting, reaching, and lifting are major culprits for seasonal back strain.
Traveling to see loved ones? Long car rides, carrying suitcases, and shuffling through airports can all ramp up discomfort.
Add stress, disrupted sleep, and neglecting your regular exercise routines, and suddenly, your back feels the fallout.
Exercise of the Month
Standing Lumbar Self-Traction (Lower Back)
Stand in front of a sturdy counter or bench about waist height. Place your hands firmly on the surface and slowly bend your knees slightly while leaning your weight into your arms. Allow your hips to drop downward, feeling a gentle stretch and decompression in your lower back. Hold the position briefly, then return to standing. 3 Sets, 30-Second Hold. (Materials needed: counter or bench)
End-of-Year Reminder: Use Your 2025 Benefits Before They Expire!
The year is wrapping up fast, and so are your 2025 insurance benefits. If you’ve been putting off a visit or dealing with nagging aches and pains, now’s the perfect moment to take care of yourself. A quick tune-up can help you move into the holidays feeling better, calmer, and way more comfortable.
Don’t let unused benefits go to waste – schedule your appointment now and start the season pain-free.
Smart Habits to Protect Your Back
Here are some practical, doctor-recommended strategies to help safeguard your back during this busy time:
- Lift wisely.
Don’t bend at the waist. Instead, bend your knees, keep your back straight, and hold heavy items close to your body. - Break up your tasks.
Rather than tackling everything at once, decorating, cooking, and shopping, spread it out. Take frequent breaks and switch positions regularly to give your muscles a rest. - Do it together.
Ask family or friends for help with decorating, lifting, or shopping. - Maintain good posture.
Whether you’re standing, sitting, or driving, pay attention to alignment. Try to engage your core, keep your shoulders relaxed, and don’t stay in one position too long. - Use travel supports.
When you’re on the move, bring a small lumbar pillow or rolled-up towel to support the natural curve of your lower back. - Stay active (but don’t overdo it).
Regular light exercise can keep muscles loose and resilient. Even during holiday chaos, try to work mini movement breaks into your day. - Manage stress.
Tension and stress make muscle tightness worse. Slow things down by building “you time” into your schedule – breathing exercises, short walks, or relaxing stretches can go a long way. - Listen to your body.
If you feel pain creeping in, don’t push through it. Take precautions, rest when needed, and don’t ignore warning signs.
How Hands of Hope Can Help You Stay Pain-Free
Here’s where Hands of Hope really stands out, because we don’t just treat symptoms, we address what’s underneath them, through a fully integrated, team-based approach.
