Research-Backed Interventions for Managing Lymphedema

Lymphedema can be a complex condition to manage. It often causes intense swelling in the limbs, which can have both physical and psychological impacts. Adding to this is the fact that lymphedema often occurs after cancer treatments. For many, it can feel as if they beat one disease only to develop another.

Fortunately, Hands of Hope offers several evidence-based interventions for managing lymphedema symptoms. These techniques, collectively known as lymphatic therapy, help reduce swelling, improve mobility, and allow you to live a rich, healthy life.

You have options for managing lymphedema. Schedule an appointment at one of our [state-name-one] or [state-name-two] clinic locations to learn more.

Understanding Lymphedema

Lymphedema affects your lymphatic system, which serves as a waste disposal system for your body. Your cells and tissues create a waste fluid called lymph (or lymphatic fluid). The lymphatic system clears this fluid away to be processed back into your bloodstream.

Lymphedema develops when that lymphatic fluid doesn’t drain properly, leading to intense swelling in the arms and legs. As a result, you may struggle with joint pain or restricted mobility.

Most people who develop lymphedema do so following cancer treatments, including radiation therapy. Unfortunately, lymphedema has no cure, but the team at Hands of Hope can help you manage your condition.

Managing Symptoms with Lymphatic Therapy

Our physical therapists will work closely with you to develop a personalized treatment plan, pulling from several evidence-based interventions. Our goal is to help you manage swelling and other symptoms. Your plan might include the following:

  • Lymphatic Drainage: This technique is a specialized kind of massage in which our therapists will use their hands to encourage the movement of your lymphatic fluid out of the affected area.
  • Compression Bandages or Garments: Compression garments fit tightly around the affected area, encouraging your lymphatic fluid to flow. We’ll help you find the right garments for your needs and ensure you’re using them correctly.
  • Regular Exercise: Staying active can help relieve your symptoms. We’ll help you find the right types of exercise for your needs.
  • Additional Guidance: We can provide additional strategies for managing your condition, from self-massage techniques to information about proper skincare.

Living with lymphedema can be challenging–but our specialized lymphatic therapy program can help! Request an appointment with Hands of Hope today to learn more.
