An Effective Approach for Migraines and Other Facial Pain

Do you suffer from migraines or other types of severe, debilitating headaches? If other treatments have failed to provide relief, a sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) block could work for you. This technique blocks pain signals from the sphenopalatine ganglion, a nerve cluster located in the face.

Is an SPG block the right choice for you? The team at Hands of Hope can let you know for sure. Call today to get started.

What Conditions Can Benefit from a Sphenopalatine Ganglion Block?

We incorporate SPG blocks into treatment plans for different types of facial pain, especially headaches and migraines:

  • Cluster Headaches: A cluster headache causes repeating attacks of severe headache pain, usually around the same time each day. They typically occur on one side of the head, behind the eye.
  • Migraines: Migraines cause severe headache pain and other symptoms, such as nausea or light sensitivity. They’re typically marked by throbbing pain on one side of the head and can last several hours, sometimes up to 3 days.
  • Sinus Headaches: You’ll experience a sinus headache in your sinuses–around your eyes, cheeks, and forehead. They develop due to an infection in your sinuses, so you’ll generally experience other symptoms like a stuffy nose or achy teeth.
  • Other Facial Pain: In addition to headaches, SPG blocks can help different types of facial pain brought on by irritation in the facial nerves, such as trigeminal neuralgia.

What To Expect from an SPG Block

An SPG block is a simple procedure. During your appointment, you’ll start by getting comfortable on an examination table so we can insert the needle for the injection. There are three main ways to reach the sphenopalatine ganglion: through the nasal passages, the roof of your mouth, or your cheek. We’ll work with you to find the best approach for your needs.

We’ll numb the area to prep for the insertion, and the process should only take a few minutes. The injection usually contains local anesthetics to block pain signals, although it might also include corticosteroids to help ease inflammation. For many people, an SPG block is a crucial part of managing pain brought on by headaches or other facial pain disorders. If you think you might benefit, contact Hands of Hope to schedule an appointment.
