Epidural Steroid Injections To Manage Back Pain
When you’re struggling with particularly intense back pain, even basic activities can feel impossible. At Hands of Hope, we offer epidural steroid injections to help you manage your discomfort so you can find lasting back pain relief.
During an epidural injection, our physicians inject corticosteroid–a powerful anti-inflammatory medicine–into the epidural space, a small sac of fluid that surrounds your spinal cord. The injection then helps to dampen your pain.
Note that these injections are different from what’s commonly called an epidural, which is a type of anesthesia given during childbirth.
Do you think you might benefit from an epidural injection? Schedule an appointment at our Astoria, Atlantic Ave, Bard Ave, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, Flatbush, Forest Hills, Manhattan, Morris Park Avenue, Mott Haven, South Bronx, Queens Village, Staten Island, Whitestone, Williamsburg or Woodhaven, NY clinic for an initial consultation.
When is An Epidural Injection the Right Choice?
Epidural injections help manage severe back pain caused by irritated spinal nerves. Here are some of the reasons your nerves might become damaged or inflamed:
- Herniated Disc: This is one of the most common sources of severe back pain. It occurs when one of the soft, cushiony discs between your vertebrae bulges or ruptures and irritates the nearby spinal nerve.
- Sciatica and Other Radiculopathies: A herniated disc often leads to sciatica, which causes sharp, shooting pains down the back of your leg, along with numbness or tingling. Sciatica occurs when something irritates the sciatic nerve; however, when other spinal nerves are affected, it causes similar symptoms in different locations. This is known as radiculopathy.
- Spinal Stenosis: Spinal stenosis causes your spinal column to narrow, which entraps the nerves. Foraminal stenosis is a type of stenosis that occurs at the place where the nerve exits the spinal column and can cause long-term damage.
- Postherpetic Neuralgia: Postherpetic neuralgia is a complication of shingles, causing burning pain in the skin and nerves long after the shingles rash has disappeared.

What To Expect During an Epidural Injection
Epidural injections are a fairly straightforward procedure. During the appointment, you’ll typically lie down on your stomach, so we have access to your spine. We’ll then numb the injection site and, if needed, provide medication to help you relax.
We always use an X-ray to guide the injection to the correct spot on your back. After we’ve performed the injection, we’ll monitor you for 15-20 minutes to ensure a good recovery.
You’ll notice a gradual improvement in your back pain over the next few days, although how long it will last can vary. Our physicians will work with you to develop a comprehensive treatment plan with an eye toward long-term management if not complete resolution. An epidural injection can bring you the relief you need.
