A Results-Oriented Approach to Back Pain Relief

Anyone who’s experienced back pain knows how wide-ranging its impacts can be. You might find it harder to get out of bed each morning or complete your usual workout routine. Worse, you might even think twice before doing activities you once enjoyed.

When your back hurts, it can be tempting to just rest and hope the discomfort goes away. Unfortunately, this often worsens symptoms like stiffness or weakness.

Instead, you want to work with the Hands of Hope team to develop a treatment plan that fits your unique needs. Some people benefit from physical therapy and regular exercise. Others may need advanced pain management to reduce symptoms enough to move and function more comfortably. In many cases, combining approaches can provide the most appropriate path forward.

That’s where Hands of Hope can help. Our team brings together physical therapists and pain management specialists to provide comprehensive care based on your symptoms, function, and goals.

Why Does Back Pain Happen?

Back pain rarely has one simple explanation. It’s true that you can suddenly hurt your back, often while lifting something improperly, but there are usually other factors at play as well.

What we call “the back” is a system of muscles, connective tissues, and nerves that support the spine and help support movement. Sometimes, back pain stems from an issue with the spine itself. Other times, it results from irritation or increased sensitivity in the back’s soft tissues.

In either case, daily habits often play a bigger role in back pain than you might realize. Long periods of sitting, sudden increases in physical activity, or repetitive movements can all contribute to symptoms.

Chronic back pain is even more complicated. When your pain persists for several months, there’s often no underlying tissue damage. Instead, changes in how your nervous system processes pain can also contribute to increased sensitivity, while factors such as sleep, stress, activity levels, and overall health may influence symptoms.

That’s why treatment at Hands of Hope always starts with a comprehensive evaluation–and why we consider the many factors that may be contributing to your symptoms and function when creating a care plan.

A Comprehensive Approach to Back Pain Treatment

Your first appointment will consist of an evaluation focused on identifying the factors contributing to your symptoms. We’ll consider:

  • The location and nature of your pain
  • Your mobility and strength
  • How pain affects your daily activities
  • Your overall goals for recovery

From there, we’ll select the best treatment strategies for your needs.

What Approaches Do We Offer For Back Pain?

Physical Therapy

Movement-based rehabilitation can help restore mobility, build strength, and improve your ability to tolerate everyday activities. We may incorporate hands-on treatments, strengthening exercises, core stabilization, and gradual exposure to activities that have become difficult or uncomfortable based on your individual needs.

Treatment Modalities

We offer several supplemental treatments to enhance your care plan, including the Graston technique, cupping, electrotherapy, and therapeutic ultrasound. These techniques can help reduce pain and facilitate healing.

Advanced Pain Management

For persistent or severe symptoms, we incorporate medical pain management alongside active rehabilitation. We offer several pain management injections that can help with back pain, including facet joint injections and nerve blocks.

Weight Loss Program

Reducing excess body weight can help decrease stress on the spine and other joints and may make regular physical activity easier. Our medical weight loss program combines clinician-guided medication when appropriate, individualized exercise, and support for healthier eating habits.

Therapeutic Yoga

Therapeutic yoga offers another way to support comfortable, confident movement. Guided yoga can complement rehabilitation by addressing mobility, strength, body awareness, and movement control.

Treatment Goals Tailored to Your Needs

At Hands of Hope, we don’t simply want to mask pain. We want to help you perform the activities that matter most to you. For that reason, we always personalize treatment plans based on your needs. Together, we’ll work toward practical goals such as:

  • Bending and reaching with greater comfort
  • Sitting or standing longer
  • Walking farther
  • Returning to exercise or recreational activities
  • Completing work and household tasks more comfortably

When Is It Time to Consider Injections for Back Pain?

While conservative care, such as physical therapy and regular activity, is considered a frontline treatment for back pain, there are some cases where additional medical treatments, including certain injections, may be appropriate. At Hands of Hope, we consider these treatments based on your symptoms, diagnosis, response to conservative care, and overall treatment goals.

When Might an Injection Be a Good Choice?

Ultimately, choosing the right treatment technique for back pain depends on several factors, including the cause of your pain, how long your symptoms have been going on, and how they affect your daily function.

Here are some of the situations where an injection might be a good fit:

Pain remains significant despite conservative care.

This is the most common reason we recommend injections. If you’ve already tried physical therapy, activity modification, and regular exercise, injections or nerve blocks might be a logical next step.

Pain travels into your leg.

An epidural steroid injection can help if you’re dealing with sciatica or lumbar radiculopathy, which can cause shooting pain, tingling, or numbness down the leg. Epidural injections can help reduce pain and boost function.

A specific joint appears to be the source of your pain.

We often recommend facet joint injections when your back pain stems from the small joints connecting the vertebrae. If your sacroiliac joint (the joint that connects the pelvis to the lower spine) is involved, we recommend SI joint injections, which target a likely source of the pain directly.

Tight, painful muscle knots are contributing to symptoms.

Trigger point injections target these knots, helping not only to reduce pain but to potentially improve movement as well.

Find the Right Approach for Your Back Pain

Persistent pain deserves an individualized assessment and a treatment plan that fits your needs. Contact Hands of Hope today to learn whether injections, physical therapy, or a combination of treatments may help you move and function more comfortably.

Exercise of the Month

Bird Dog

(Core, Lower Back, Glutes)

Start on your hands and knees on a mat or table. Brace your abdominals and keep your back flat. Slowly raise one arm straight out in front of you while simultaneously raising your opposite leg back behind you until both limbs are straight and parallel with the ground. Lower them back down and repeat with your other limbs. 3 Sets, 10 Reps.

Meat Loaf

This traditional meat loaf recipe creates a tender, juicy meat loaf topped with a caramelized glaze. The best part: It’s so easy to make, and it’s ready to eat in about an hour!

Ingredients:

  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 3/4 cup 2% milk
  • 2/3 cup finely crushed saltines
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon rubbed sage
  • Dash pepper
  • 1-1/2 pounds lean ground beef (90% lean)
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, combine the first 7 ingredients. Add beef; mix lightly but thoroughly. Shape into an 8×4-in. loaf in an ungreased 15x10x1-in. baking pan.
  • In a small bowl, combine remaining ingredients, stirring to dissolve sugar; remove 1/2 cup for sauce. Spread remaining mixture over meat loaf.
  • Bake 60-65 minutes or until a thermometer inserted in meat loaf reads 160°. Let stand 10 minutes before slicing. Serve with reserved sauce.
