Manage Facial Pain with a Trigeminal Nerve Block
Have you been dealing with severe, persistent pain in your face? A trigeminal nerve block, which targets the main nerve that delivers facial sensation, could help minimize discomfort. The process involves inserting the trigeminal nerve with anesthesia and corticosteroids to block pain signals, offering powerful relief.

What Conditions Can a Trigeminal Nerve Block Address?
Here are some of the ways your trigeminal nerve can cause severe pain and discomfort:
- Trigeminal Neuralgia: This condition occurs when the trigeminal nerve becomes irritated, leading to sudden, repeating pain attacks, typically on one side of the face. You might experience additional symptoms like throbbing, numbness, or aching between attacks.
- Cluster Headaches: These extremely painful headaches tend to occur in a cluster–that is, daily repeating attacks that last a few minutes or a few hours. You typically experience them on one side of the face, behind an eye.
- Facial Migraines: Migraines are severe headaches often accompanied by other symptoms like light or sound sensitivity and nausea. While they typically occur in the head, some people experience them in the face or around the jaw.
- Facial Pain from Shingles: Shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful rash. This rash can develop anywhere, including the face. Sometimes, you can develop a painful condition known as postherpetic neuralgia even after the rash has resolved.

What to Expect From Your Trigeminal Nerve Block
Like other types of nerve blocks, a trigeminal nerve block is a relatively simple procedure. We’ll help you get comfortable and relaxed as you lie down on an examining table. We’ll then numb the side of your face before inserting a needle, guided by X-rays for accurate placement, into your trigeminal nerve. At that point, we’ll inject the nerve with medication to block pain and reduce inflammation.
The whole process should take about 10 minutes, and we’ll release you after 15-20 minutes of observation. You may experience some pain fluctuations over the next few days, but eventually, your symptoms should lessen.
For lasting effects, you’ll typically need multiple injections. Our physicians will work with you to develop the right pain management plan for your needs.Managing facial pain can help you live your life to the fullest.
