Calm an Inflamed Spinal Nerve with a Nerve Root Block Injection
If your back pain is accompanied by radiating pain, numbness, or tingling, it’s likely stemming from an issue with a nerve. In those cases, a selective nerve root block injection targets your discomfort at its source, numbing the pain so you can focus on resolving the underlying issue.
Don’t let back pain keep you from your favorite activities. Schedule an appointment with Hands of Hope to learn how we can help.
What Conditions Can a Nerve Root Block Injection Help With?
This injection is appropriate when a spinal nerve has become inflamed, which can be extremely painful and debilitating. Some common causes of inflammation in the spinal nerves include the following:
- Herniated Disc: This condition occurs when an intervertebral disc–the soft “cushion” between your vertebrae–ruptures or bulges and presses against a nearby spinal nerve, causing intense back pain.
- Radiculopathy: Radiculopathy is an umbrella term for an irritated spinal nerve. It causes pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates out from the spine and into the extremities (your arms and legs).
- Sciatica: Sciatica is a specific type of radiculopathy, referring to pain that radiates down the back of one leg. It occurs when something irritates the sciatic nerve (usually a herniated disc).
- Spinal Stenosis: This condition occurs when the spinal column narrows, putting pressure on the spinal nerves.
- Foraminal Stenosis: This is a type of stenosis that develops in the place where the nerve exits the spinal column, trapping the nerve. It’s a bit like what happens when you close a door on an electrical cord.
- Postherpetic Neuralgia: This condition is a complication from shingles that causes a burning pain in the nerves and skin affected by the shingles outbreak. The symptoms last after the shingles rash has healed.

What to Expect During a Nerve Root Block Injection
We begin with a careful diagnostic process to correctly identify the affected nerve root. Then, we use X-ray and ultrasound to accurately guide the injection into place.
Nerve root block injections typically contain an anesthetic mixed with a corticosteroid, essentially ” blocking” the pain messages sent to your brain. The result is a reduction in pain sensations.
In many cases, a nerve root block injection works best when paired with physical therapy, which helps strengthen the back and core muscles and works to address the underlying injury or impairment that caused your pain in the first place. These injections can help manage your pain so you can complete your prescribed exercises more successfully.
