OA & Joint Replacement

TREATMENT in NEW YORK CITY

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis in the upper and lower extremities can have many causes. Past sports or work-related injuries, overuse, or trauma from an accident are just some of the possibilities. Over of period of time, our past traumas result in osteoarthritis in the joints. This can occur in any joint throughout the body, although is most commonly seen in the knees and hips.

Symptoms of osteoarthritis include pain in the joints, inflammation, swelling, and crepitus (audible cracking) with motion. Physical therapy interventions have been proven to reduce the pain and discomfort associated with OA, increasing overall functional mobility, independence, and longevity until recommended surgery.

Total Joint Replacement

The majority of joint replacements are performed to eliminate chronic joint pain felt from osteoarthritis, although some are performed due to the severity of an injury. The most common total joint replacements are for the hip, knee and shoulder. Physical Therapy interventions are pivotal in recovering optimal functionality, with minimal residual pain from the surgery.

Therapy Interventions

  • Aquatherapy interventions to improve functional mobility while reducing pain.
  • Therapeautic exercise tailored to increasing range of motion, strength and joint mobility.
  • Manual interventions such as soft tissue mobilizations and massage to target pain and superficial restrictions
  • Gait training to ensure a normal walking pattern and reduce increased impact put on the joints
  • Modalities such as ultrasound and electrotherapy to facilitate healing and reduce inflammation and pain
